SunPass is Florida's official prepaid toll program, operated by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Launched in the late 1990s and now serving millions of Florida drivers, SunPass is the state's primary toll payment system and the default choice for anyone who drives Florida's extensive toll road network regularly. The program offers two transponder options: the SunPass Mini ($5), a sticker transponder for standard vehicles, and the SunPass PRO ($15+), a portable transponder that additionally works at all E-ZPass-equipped locations nationwide. SunPass customers consistently pay the lowest toll rates at Florida's plazas — always less than cash payers and significantly less than Toll-By-Plate (license plate billing), which charges the full toll plus an additional administrative fee. The app itself manages your prepaid account: you fund it in advance, the transponder deducts tolls as you pass through, and the app lets you monitor your balance, view transaction history, add funds, set up auto-replenishment, activate new transponders, and manage multiple vehicles. Where SunPass genuinely excels is in coverage and savings — it is unmatched for Florida residents and frequent visitors. The app's weaknesses are well-documented in its low App Store rating (1.6 stars): slow performance, an outdated interface, and a confusing balance display that uses parentheses to indicate negative balances rather than a clear warning, which has caused users to unknowingly overdraft their accounts and incur toll violations. Despite the app's limitations, SunPass itself remains the single best toll payment option for anyone who drives Florida roads more than a few times per year.
